About Our Firm

Jim Turlington, Partner

James T. Turlington (Jim) is a Partner and one of the founding Members of Turlington, Reeves & Orlando, PLLC (“TRO”) a firm of two partners and fourteen staff. For over 25 years, his practice has focused on the Federal Income Taxation of Partnerships and S-Corporations of privately held businesses and their owners. For many clients, TRO prepares and files the personal income tax returns of partners and officers.

Jim began his career in 1988 as a new staff with Arthur Andersen LLP (“Andersen”) in Houston, Texas. Prior to starting his own firm in 1995, Jim was a Tax Manager with Andersen and was a member of the Real Estate, Oil & Gas, and Compensation & Benefits Services teams. While at Andersen, Jim advised and prepared the tax returns of large partnership clients including Gerald Hines Interests (a large Houston based real estate investment and development company) and El Paso Energy partnerships.

After starting his own firm, Jim was engaged by Shell Oil Company to prepare the tax returns of their large partnerships, including Coral Energy and Aera Energy. Jim currently represents clients before the IRS and state taxing authorities. His experience allows him to bring BIG Firm expertise to his clients.

Jim received his Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Accounting in 1987 from Baylor University. Jim is a member of the American Institute of CPAs, the Texas Society of CPAs, and the Houston CPA Society.

Joel Mathews, Partner

Joel Mathews is a Partner of Turlington, Reeves & Orlando, PLLC (“TRO”).  Joel has lived and worked in the greater Houston area for over 23 years.  Joel brings to TRO his federal and state tax experience and knowledge from working in both the public and private sectors.

Joel began his career in 1992 as a tax accountant working for Universal Computer Systems (now known as “Reynolds and Reynolds”) in the area of sales & use tax.  In 1997 Joel made his first shift into public accounting when he went to work for Ernst & Young LLP in their SALT group.  While on assignment he was hired away by Unocal Corporation to head up the state and local tax group in the Sugar Land, Texas office.  Joel took on the role of State Tax Manager for Unocal from 1998 until early 2001, with the outsourcing of the Unocal tax department to Arthur Andersen LLP.  This transition was Joel’s second tour in the arena of public accounting.  Joel left Arthur Andersen to take a state tax accountant role at ExxonMobil for about a year, before being lured back to Unocal to return once again as the State Tax Manager.  Joel continued as the State Tax Manager from 2002 up to the 2005 acquisition of Unocal by Chevron USA.

After two years working with the Chevron tax department, Joel decided to go out on his own in late 2007 to start his own tax practice.  As the founding member of J. M. Mathews PLLC, Joel worked with clients on state tax matters, including compliance, research and state tax audit support.  Realizing the need to work with new and growing business, Joel began working with business owners to respond to both federal and state tax needs.

Ever since the formation of J. M. Mathews PLLC in 2007, Joel has had a working relationship with TRO.  From that association, the decision to combine firms was made and in 2013 Joel joined TRO as a partner.

Joel received his Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Accounting in 1992 from Stephen F. Austin State University. Joel is a member of the American Institute of CPAs, the Texas Society of CPAs, and the Houston CPA Society.

Retired partner, Ron Orlando, was also a founding member of Turlington, Reeves & Orlando PLLC.  For more than 28 years Ron practiced as a CPA in the greater Katy / West Houston area.  Ron graduated of the University of Houston and received his CPA certificate in 1975.  During that time he worked with many clients, helping them with tax consultation, planning and preparation.   Ron retired from TRO effective April 30, 2014.  TRO would like to thank Ron for his dedication over the years and continue to wish him all the best in his new endeavors.

Former partner and founding member Weldon Reeves left Turlington, Reeves & Orlando PLLC in 2011 to pursue other ventures.  Prior to the formation of TRO, Weldon Reeves and Jim Turlington were partners and founding members of Turlington, Reeves & Richard, PLLC.
